Meghshala was Semico’s first job escapade, the past year in Meghalaya has been a year filled with learning, growth, and exposure for Semico CH Sangma who is one of the IPAs from Meghalaya. He has given us a snippet of his life as a Meghshala IPA during what can only be described as one of the most challenging and trying times for the world but more particularly the education field. Semico shares his gratitude for being given the opportunity to connect with the people of his state on a deeper level. Through Meghshala, he was able to reach out to many teachers and students in his district and interact with them which would not have been possible otherwise. His involvement with Meghshala in his state not only provided him with the work experience he wanted but also gave him a more personal and intimate understanding of education in East Garo Hills, the district he is from. Although he is a local in his town, he never had to interact with teachers and students before which also restricted his consciousness of some of the issues related to education that are prevalent there. His interaction with the educators in his district helped him to value teachers and see just how committed and sincere they are in their jobs. Despite COVID and the lack of resources both teachers and students in the location had, it was inspiring for him to see the effort and empathy that went into education.


Although the year proved to be insightful and rewarding in experience, it also raised many questions as challenges snowballed into the year with schools shutting down and the team having limited exposure for physical interaction. He felt a greater sense of duty to give back and support his community and he felt like his strongest option was supporting students through Meghshala. Since many students were deprived of access to online education, Semico’s proactiveness was evident in his act of reaching out to students in his neighborhood and tutoring them at home. Although he’s not a certified teacher, his goal was to continue providing educational resources so children from his neighborhood do not miss out on their education.


Semico’s team in Meghalaya has always been supportive of him as they try to come up with new solutions and ideas to make the best of the virtual/distanced implementation. His respect and gratitude towards the Meghshala team in giving him independence yet the confidence to take charge in his own community is evident in his successes. 2020 has undoubtedly been a year of uncertainty, difficulty, and demanding but it also brought about a bigger sense of duty, purpose, and drive that he considers an advantage to his own personal growth.
